Tenderstem broccoli, also known as broccolini, is a hybrid of broccoli and gai lan (a sort of Chinese kale). It is considered a superfood as it is rich in a variety of nutrients, and makes a great alternative to normal (calabrese) broccoli. It is a source of vitamins A, C, and E, as well as potassium and folic acid. Full nutritional information can be found here.

It has a slightly different flavour to normal broccoli, tasting a little more like asparagus. I like to steam mine from 20-30 minutes depending on how much I’m cooking but it can be boiled, stir-fried, grilled or even eaten raw! I normally eat three vegetables with my main meal and I like one of those to be a green. This has to be one of my favourites.
It’s a versatile vegetable and it can be added to many recipes even if just as a replacement for normal broccoli. Some recipe ideas can be found here.
Enjoy!
